West Nile Virus: Animals

Most animals, including dogs and cats, that are bitten by a mosquito infected with West Nile Virus will not become sick. West Nile illness occurs primarily in certain types of birds,  horses and humans.

West Nile infection has been reported in more than
280 bird species in the United States with the most severe illnesses seen among crows, jays, ravens and magpies. West Nile virus infections affecting the nervous system have also been reported in squirrels, goats, sheep, and llamas, but the susceptibility of these animals to West Nile virus is not well known. Birds and animals cannot transmit the West Nile Virus to people. Horses are susceptible to West Nile virus; however, a vaccine is available.
